Facebook is slowly becoming a resume. Now you can put when and where you attended a university, where you work or worked at, your future aspirations and so on. You’ve probably heard some people touch on how companies look at what their prospective employees indulge in on Facebook before hiring them.
Should you be worried or is it just a bunch of crock? I think in this day and age if you do not know the answer to that question then you are either in denial or don’t care to have a career. I’ve been told that some companies are now asking candidates in the middle of interviews to log into their social networking sites in order to access what the candidate fills their days with.
The better question we are now forced to ask ourselves is, if the company we’ve dreamed of working with asked us during an interview for our usernames and passwords to social network pages, would we oblige? What we need to ask these human resource departments is, does our Facebook and/or Twitter pages reflect our work ethic? I don’t know about you, but the way I act at work is 180 from how I act at happy hour and I’m sure the same goes for most people if not everyone.
Now my question and the most important question of all is why should we have to ask these questions to begin with? What do my social networking pages have to do with anything? So, you mean to tell me that I cannot hold a red solo cup in my hand while kissing my significant other on the cheek at a place that is crowded? How exactly does that reflect my working abilities? Why must my social network (HUGE emphasis on social) reflect my work ethic? If I feel like going out with my girlfriends later to take a shot of patron and tweet about it because you my boss worked my nerves today, what law says I can’t? Haven’t these people ever heard of there’s a time and place for everything, or work hard and play harder? I’m confused here, are they going to start popping into my apartment to see if I’m behaving as well? Before you know it, applications will include Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram login information.
